wild organic blueberry burning Downeast Maine

Burning blueberry barrens is a natural reset utilized for thousands of years.  Disclaimer:  Burning requires patience, lots of equipment, manpower and experience.  Conditions must be perfect, rules followed, here is what fire does for the blueberries.

First we mostly use a light weight and torquie  Kubota that sips the diesel and can run on up to 20% bio-fuel.  The bota takes care of most of the work around the farm by mechanically pulling brush with the tree puller and mowing the blueberries.  Shown in the ‘Peeper’ field featured in this burning blog.

Setting up the backburns in April.

Its all about getting the freeburn total about 10 acres in May.

About 2 months later in late June.

Mid July progress with expected harvest date August of 2019.

Late July ready for organic blueberry inspection.

Organic Certification

Currently applying for MOFGA Organic certification for the 2018 harvest.  “Resting” since the 1960’s our lands are free of any pesticides and chemicals.  We rely on naturally producing blueberry barrens, mulching, mechanical pruning and natures reset burning.  Wild describes the land alive with insects pollinating, peepers in the ponds, rodents foraging and birds of prey overhead.
